Hot Prowl Cases in the West Gate Area of Los Angeles

In May of 1999, a series of crimes including one hot prowl burglary and two hot prowl sexual assaults occurred in the West Gate community of West Los Angeles. In each case the suspect entered the residence through an opened or unlocked window or door. Once inside, the suspect demanded money and jewelry and in two cases sexually assaulted middle-aged victims. In both sexual assault cases, the suspect displayed a stabbing-type instrument and wore head and face coverings.

Between May and July 2000, a series of crimes including two hot prowl sexual assaults and two residential robberies occurred in the same West Gate community of West Los Angeles. In all but one of these cases the suspect entered the residences through unlocked windows or doors. In one case the suspect pried a window to force entry. Once inside, the suspect has demanded money and jewelry and in two cases sexually assaulted elderly victims. On some of these latest incidents the suspect did not cover his face. Detectives are working with the victims to create a composite drawing of the suspect.

Several other crimes, including hot prowl burglaries and prowler complaints, with similar suspect descriptions and Modus Operandi (MO’s) have been reported in the same area. This investigation is being conducted by Robbery-Homicide Division, Rape Special Section. All of these cases are being reviewed to determine if they are related, or if the same suspect is responsible.

The suspect’s description in these incidents is as follows: Male, possibly African-American , with light to medium complexion, black hair (in various hair styles), possible light brown or hazel eyes, approximately 6’0 tall, 160 pounds, 25 to 30 years old.

Community Alerts flyers have been distributed in the West Gate area to warn the community of these crimes and to request the community’s assistance in the investigation. Media Relations Section has copies of the Community Alert Flyers that have been distributed to the community.
