WHY: The LAPD is providing a unique opportunity for the media to observe the training provided to officers on Mental Health Intervention. LAPD officers are often confronted with a variety of situations involving persons with mental health issues on a daily basis. Some of those situations involve contacts with persons suffering from a mental illness; the goal of the Department is to provide a humane, cooperative, compassionate and effective law enforcement response to persons within our community who are afflicted with mental illness and disorders. The Department always seeks opportunities resolve issues in our communities in the safest possible manner. Individuals who suffer from mental illness or mental disorders often need to be assessed by professionals in order to provide them with the best possible service for their issues. The MHIT training helps to better equip officers with skills and knowledge to interact with persons they encounter who may suffer from such conditions. The Department believes that this training is cutting edge and provides our personnel with increased skills to serve our communities.
As space is limited, reservations should be made as soon as possible to attend. Please note that attendees will be required to present valid media credentials to enter the Police Headquarters Facility, which is a secure building.
