Why:
Since 2019, VTD has been in partnership with the National Youth Project Using Mini-bikes (NYPUM) program. This national youth mentoring program began in 1969. The Los Angeles Police Department is the first police department on the west coast to adopt this youth mentoring program and believes it will help reduce crime by fostering positive relationships with our community’s youth. The program consists of youth participants between the ages of 10-17 years old that are living in an "at risk" environment or that have been identified as performing at less than their potential due to their environment.
This year the youths have been selected from the Department’s Community Safety Partnership areas, Jordan Downs, Pueblo Del Rio, San Fernando Gardens, and a non-profit group called the GEMS. The GEMS program is overseen by STD supervisor, Sergeant I+2 Bridgette Peterson (#33628), who is currently the only active duty female motor officer/supervisor on the Department.
Sergeant Peterson has a YouTube video (GEMS X Extreme) of the GEMS group documenting their first day in training with NYPUM. The video provides insight on the GEMS and NYPUM programs plus it credits the VTD personnel involved with NYPUM.
Through grants and donations VTD provides the safety equipment to be worn during each training session, (i.e. helmet, goggles and gloves, pants, and boots).
