On September 13, 2024, at 3:43 a.m., the Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) responded to a fully involved fire on the 700 block of New Depot Street in a three-story apartment building under construction. Four other occupied residential, multi-story apartment complexes were also exposed to the fire. Mass evacuations of the adjacent occupied apartments occurred because of these fires.
An elderly tenant sustained a smoke inhalation injury, and another female tenant sustained burn injuries to her hands and arms. Two firefighters suffered minor injuries.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation. The LAFD Arson/Counter-Terrorism Section is assisting LAPD with the origin and cause of the fire. LAPD’s Major Crimes Division is the lead entity in this incident.
