LAPD Statement Regarding Proposed Layoffs NR20308dm

The Los Angeles Police Department received the City Administrative Officer’s Second Financial Status Report for the fiscal year, amidst the extraordinary financial challenges brought about by this historic pandemic. This City’s fiscal challenges will require a shared sacrifice on the part of everyone. However, these recommendations identified crippling cutbacks to the Department, including proposed layoffs of hundreds of sworn and civilian employees. These workforce reductions are on top of earlier staff reductions of more than 500 personnel and other cutbacks to meet a $151 million dollar cut implemented by the City Council.

Chief Michel Moore stated, “These envisioned staffing reductions would devastate our ability to provide basic public safety, requiring the closure of local stations and jails, the reduction and elimination of services, and ultimately it would jeopardize the reforms and gains achieved in public safety over the last two decades. I cannot support further reductions. As every single one of our Department employees have shown, whether sworn or civilian, police matter. It is critical in this time of such turmoil and crisis that the core responsibility of city government, maintaining public safety, be the top priority. To Protect and To Serve.
