Last Police Woman Retires From LAPD

Los Angeles – On Wednesday, July 12, 2000, the last of the Los Angeles Police Department’s "Police Women", Sally Barnes will retire after 31 and 1/2 years of service to the City of Los Angeles. Officer Barnes is the last LAPD officer to hold the title Police Woman. The designation was changed to Police Officer in 1974. Barnes was hired on February 24, 1969 and was one of only 150 Police Women at the time. There are now more than 1200 female officers on the LAPD. Her retirement marks the end of an era and witnesses the tremendous strides women have made on the LAPD in the last 30 years. She has served under six different Chiefs of Police and has worked in various capacities throughout the Department, including undercover assignments in Vice, Narcotics and patrol assignments in Central, West Valley and Van Nuys Area Community Police Stations. She is well known throughout the Devonshire Area where she has worked for the past 20 years.
