Venice: On June 19, 2023, around 10:50 p.m., Los Angeles Police Department’s Pacific Division officers responded to a radio call near the area of Market Street and Main Street, for a male adult subject on top of a Metropolitan Transit Bus. When officers arrived, they attempted to speak with the male subject, when he fled and climbed onto the roof of a near-by vacant building.
Los Angeles Police Department, along with the Los Angeles Fire Department, again made efforts to communicate with the male subject, encouraging him to come down from the roof where he could receive help. At one point in this interaction, the male subject, still on the roof, was seen throwing a piece of wood down onto the ground. None of the emergency responders or bystanders were in danger of being injured by the wood.
Officers from the Los Angeles Police Department’s Mental Evaluation Unit responded and made efforts to communicate with the male subject to no avail. In assessing the situation, considering the safety of the subject and the public, the Los Angeles Fire Department and Los Angeles Police Department disengaged from the call.
On June 20, 2023, around 6:30 a.m., officers received an additional radio call describing the male subject on the roof. At this time, Pacific officers returned to the location and the male subject complied with the officer’s request to come down from the roof for help. The male subject was transported to a local hospital for evaluation.
