Los Angeles: A man dies in a jail cell for reasons that have not yet been determined.
On October 28, 2011, Jason Calhoun was arrested in 77th Street Area for Penal Code Section 245 (A) (1) Assault with a Deadly Weapon and initially booked into the 77th Street Jail Facility.
On October 29, 2011, Calhoun was transferred to Metropolitan Detention Center (MDC) as part of a routine transfer of prisoners to relieve potential overcrowding at 77th Street Jail. Calhoun was seen by MDC medical staff on October 29, 2011 at 2:32 p.m., and again on October 30, 2011, at1:25 a.m., for a pre-existing medical condition. Around 12:45 p.m., jail personnel were in the process of feeding the prisoners lunch when jail personnel noticed that Calhoun was non-responsive. Jail personnel made entry into the cell and immediately summoned for MDC medical staff. Medical staff responded and were unable to find any sign of life, and immediately began resuscitation efforts.
Los Angeles City Fire Department Paramedics responded and determined Calhoun died at scene.
Force Investigation Division personnel responded and are investigating the In Custody Death.
