Los Angeles: Mayor Eric Garcetti
announced today that several City of Los Angeles cooling centers
will have extended hours beginning Sunday, so that Angelenos
without access to air conditioning will have a place to escape
dangerous, higher than normal temperatures.
The Los Angeles County of Public Health has issued a Heat Emergency
for the San Fernando Valley that will be in effect from Sunday,
August 27 through Wednesday, August 30. Temperatures across the
region will be dangerously high. Tips for staying cool, along with
a list of cooling centers, are available at
emergency.lacity.org/heat or by calling 311.
“Angelenos should have a place to go for relief from the
heat – especially children and seniors, who can be most vulnerable
to the effects of high temperatures,” said Mayor Garcetti. “Our
City’s libraries, recreation centers, and senior centers are all
part of our network of cooling centers, and they are always
available to residents during normal business hours. We’re adding
hours at several centers on the hottest days so that anyone who
needs help can stay cool, healthy, and safe.”
Mayor Garcetti also encouraged Angelenos to do their part to save
energy and help avoid electricity shortages. Tips for saving energy
are available at Save Energy LA.
The following locations will have extended hours, operating until
11 p.m. on Sunday, August 27 through Wednesday, August 30. These
locations are also pet-friendly. Pets are welcome if owners remain
in control of their animals and clean up after them at all
times.
