Los Angeles: Los Angeles Police Department’s (LAPD) Force Investigation Division is investigating an Officer-Involved Shooting (OIS) that occurred in a Southwest Division neighborhood early Saturday evening.

On July 22, 2017, around 07:00 p.m., Metropolitan Division uniformed officers; Police Officer III Jesse D. Pineda, Serial No. 37260 and his partner were conducting crime suppression in Southwest Division. While in the area of 29th Street and Chesapeake Avenue, they observed two male individuals on 29th Street. Officer Pineda and his partner attempted to make contact with the individuals, however one ran into the rear yard of a residence. Believing the individual was armed, the officers chased the one individual (who was later identified as Jamarr James Stewart) for a very short distance which ended in the 2800 block of South Chesapeake Avenue. Stewart pointed a handgun at Officer Pineda at which time Officer Pineda fired his police service weapon at Stewart. Stewart was not struck by gunfire and was immediately taken into custody without any further incident.

Stewart’s handgun was located at scene and booked as evidence. No officers were injured as a result of this incident.

LAPD’s specialized Force Investigation Division (FID) responded to the scene and began interviewing witnesses and collecting forensic evidence. The Office of the Inspector General had a representative at scene.

The complete investigation will be reviewed by the Chief of Police and the Board of Police Commissioners to determine whether the use of deadly force complied with LAPD’s policies and procedures.
