Los Angeles: At 7 p.m. on Dec. 2, 2008, the Los Angeles Police Historical Society Museum will have an unveiling ceremony for its new Boeckmann Gallery, dedicated to the history of the Los Angeles Police Commission and the achievements of one of its most accomplished Commissioners, Herbert F. Boeckman, III.
Herbert F. "Bert" Boeckmann III, served on the Los Angeles Police Commission for more than 16 years, serving as both President and Vice President of the Commission during his tenure. The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) and the Commission benefited greatly from his guidance both during times of turmoil and times of great accomplishment.
During the 1980s the City of Los Angeles and the LAPD prepared for and hosted the Olympic Games. In the ensuing years, the Pope visited Los Angeles. Each of these events marked a significant mobilization of LAPD resources, requiring the involvement and support of the Police Commission and Commissioner Boeckmann. Accordingly, each of these important events proved to be an unqualified success.
The early 1990s brought challenging times to the City, the Department and the Police Commission. Throughout the good times and the bad, the "Cop’s Commissioner," as Boeckmann was known, stood by the men and women of the LAPD. As the new century began and new technology and capabilities emerged, Commissioner Boeckmann steadfastly served the people of Los Angeles and provided the Commission with the consistency and continuity needed to effectively manage a world-class police operation.
Commissioner Boeckmann’s achievements are many and notable. While engaged in his service as a dedicated member of the Police Commission, he continued to grow his thriving business and care for the many charitable causes he has always supported, including the Los Angeles Police Historical Society.
It is with great pride that the Historical Society announces the unveiling of the Boeckmann Gallery of Los Angeles Police Commissions. This new exhibit offers a multimedia exploration of the many and diverse roles the Commission has played since its 1870 inception. The Boeckmann Gallery features a series of artifacts relative to Police Commission activities and policies throughout the years. Items such as early police manuals, medals of valor and ceremonial objects help tell the story of the citizens who have served as commissioners.
The Boeckmann Gallery unveiling ceremony is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Tuesday, December 2, 2008, at the Los Angeles Police Historical Society Museum, 6045 York Blvd., Los Angeles 90042. More information is available by contacting the Historical Society at 323-344-9445.
