Newborn Baby Girl Found Dead Inside Home

January 31, 2006

Los Angeles: A newborn baby girl was found dead inside a home at the 1900 block of Grace Avenue in Hollywood.
On January 27, 2006, at around 11:15 a.m., 18 year-old Maria Arriaga went to a local hospital due to complications after giving birth at home. The mother advised hospital personnel that the newborn was at her home and in the care of her boyfriend.
Maria Arriaga was examined by hospital personnel and asked to stay for further treatment. Arriaga left the hospital against medical advice. Those treating her then notified the authorities of the baby’s birth and the mother’s actions.
Los Angeles Police officers found Arriaga at home. The baby girl was found by the officers, with no signs of life. An autopsy conducted on January 28, 2006 revealed that the infant was born alive.
The mother was arrested for murder and booked at Van Nuys Jail. On January 31, 2006, the case was presented to the District Attorney’s Office for filing consideration.
The public should be reminded of California Safely Surrendered Baby Law, which in Los Angeles County allows mothers to leave unwanted newborn babies at any hospital emergency room or fire station within 72 hours of delivery. These individuals will not face any criminal consequences. More information on the Safely Surrender Baby Law can be obtained on the Internet at www.babysafela.org.
Detectives from the LAPD Abused Child Unit will be investigating the case.
