LAPD is stepping up enforcement efforts for Driving Under the Influence (DUI)

Los Angeles: Three DUI-related traffic collisions over the past two days have resulted in injury or death to unsuspecting persons in Los Angeles.

Hollywood-On March 19, 2021 at about 3:06 p.m., a suspect driving under the influence was involved in a traffic collision at Hollywood Blvd and Highland Ave. Five pedestrians on the sidewalk were struck by the vehicle. All individuals suffered injuries, some severe, and were transported to a local hospital for treatment. The suspect was arrested at scene and booked.

West Hills-On March 19, 2021 at about 4:05 p.m., a suspect engaged in street racing and under the influence was involved in a traffic collision at Valley Circle Blvd and Vanowen St. An uninvolved female motorist, 57 years old, was struck and killed as she was stopped at the intersection. The suspect was arrested at scene and booked.

Mid-City-On March 19, 2021 at about 4:54 p.m., a suspect driving under the influence was involved in a traffic collision at Highland Ave and 6th St. A female pedestrian at the crosswalk was struck and suffered severe life-threatening injuries. The suspect was arrested at scene and booked.

As of March 18, 2021, fatal traffic collisions are up 35 percent year-to-date, with 62 in 2021 compared to 46 in 2020. During the period of March 12, 2021 through March 19, 2021, the LAPD arrested 18 motorists for DUI after being involved in traffic collisions. The LAPD strives to inform the public of the danger of driving under the influence and has stepped up enforcement efforts to protect all members of the public and ensure safety in the roadways. For instance, on March 18 & March 19, 2021, traffic personnel conducted 1060 DUI screenings and arrested 13 persons for DUI in Operations-Valley Bureau.

Motorists can expect to see high visibility traffic enforcement and a continued commitment to educate the public on the dangers of driving under the influence, whether it be from alcohol or drugs such as marijuana or prescription medication.
