Non-Tactical Unintentional Discharge (NTUD) NRF008-21dm

March 27, 2021

Harbor City: On March 5, 2021, an off-duty officer was hosting a party at his residence. On March 6, 2021, around 4:30 a.m., the officer and one of the guests became involved in a physical altercation. After the altercation, the officer reached for a drawer where he kept his unholstered duty pistol. As he reached for the pistol, the officer’s live-in girlfriend also reached for the pistol. The officer’s hand grasped the girlfriend’s hand, which was already on the pistol, and the gun discharged.

The round penetrated the drawer and lodged in an interior wall. No one was injured as a result of the discharge. The guest called her father, who ultimately notified the Department of the incident, as the guest fled the location.

Force Investigation Division (FID) and Internal Affairs detectives responded to the scene and are investigating this incident.
