On September 28, 2022, around 6:00 a.m., an off-duty Van Nuys detective arrived to work and parked his personal vehicle in the Van Nuys parking structure. While retrieving work items from his gym bag, the detective noticed that his duty back-up weapon in the bag began sliding out of its holster. As the detective took hold of the pistol, he inadvertently fired one round into the concrete floor.
There were no other officers near that area of the parking structure at the time of the Non-Tactical Unintentional Discharge. The Van Nuys Watch Commander was notified immediately. The discharged round did not cause any damage and no officers were injured. Force Investigation Division (FID) detectives responded to the scene and are investigating this incident.
