PRESS RELEASE
Monday, March 22, 1999

On Saturday, March 20, 1999 at approximately 2:00 A.M. an off-duty Los Angeles Police Officer was with family members when he stopped at a fast food establishment located in the 9700 block of Woodman Avenue. As the Officer walked across the parking lot, he heard a shotgun blast and immediately saw a white car driving through the parking lot. As the vehicle neared him, the Officer observed the rear passenger point a handgun out the window and fire at him. Fearing for his life, the Officer fired three shots from his service pistol at the suspect who then fled out of the parking lot.

The officer and suspect were not injured as a result of the officer involved shooting.

A short time later, Foothill Division uniformed officers responded to Holy Cross Hospital and arrested three males, one which was seeking medical treatment for a shotgun pellet wound to the hand. The vehicle used in the shooting was also taken into custody at the hospital. A preliminary investigation revealed that prior to the shooting at the officer, the suspects were involved in a shootout with rival gang members at the scene. The other suspects remain outstanding.

Robbery Homicide Division in conjunction with Foothill Detectives is conducting the investigation.
