September 10, 2001

Los Angeles: On Thursday, September 6, 2001, at approximately 10:10 p.m., Newton Street Area Patrol Officers J. McBride, 32 years of age, 11 years with the Department and C. Wunder, 36 years of age, 6 ½ years with the Department were on routine patrol. The officers were driving in an alley north of 27th Street, between Hooper Avenue and Naomi Avenue. They had knowledge that the alley was frequented by narcotics users and traffickers. The officers observed an individual in the alley performing an activity, which led them to believe that he was possibly in possession of narcotics. The suspect looked in the officers’ direction then ran through an open gate into the rear yard of 1205 E. 27th Street. The officers pursued the suspect into the yard. The suspect, subsequently identified as Ardis Moore, was detained in the yard. The officers arrested and handcuffed Moore when they found him in possession of narcotics. A second suspect, subsequently identified as Derrail Robinson, male Black, 20 years of age, suddenly appeared from behind debris in the yard and began firing at the officers with a handgun. The officers engaged Robinson in a gun battle, with numerous rounds fired. Officer McBride was wounded in the left hand. Robinson ran south through the houses, out of the officers’ view. The officers requested help and broadcast Robinson’s description over their radio. Responding officers arrived as a third suspect, subsequently identified as Herman Brown, entered the rear yard. He was arrested when found to be in possession of narcotics.
As a perimeter was being established to contain Robinson, officers received information from a community member that a suspect was attempting to break into his home. Officers responded and arrested Robinson, who was hiding near 1108 E. 28th Street. A loaded 9mm handgun was found in close proximity to Robinson. Officers McBride and Wunder identified Robinson at an in-field show-up.
Officer McBride was treated at a local hospital for a wound on a finger of his left hand and was released. Robinson was booked for Attempted Murder of a Police Officer. Charges are pending on Moore and Brown, at the time of this report.
Detectives from the Officer-Involved Shooting Section, Critical Incident Investigation Division, and Homicide Special Section, Robbery-Homicide Division are conducting the investigation.
