Officer Involved in Shooting in Van Nuys Division NRF047-17fp

Sherman Oaks: On June 19, 2017 around 11:00 p.m., Los Angeles Police Department Van Nuys uniformed patrol officers responded to a domestic violence radio call in the 4200 block of Matilija Avenue. The officers were met by a female who appeared to have been battered. The officers confirmed that a domestic violence incident had occurred and the victim advised that the suspect, Mika Haukka, described as a male White in his mid-seventies was still in the area. Shortly after, the officers observed Haukka in front of the residence holding a knife in his right hand. An officer directed Haukka to drop the knife several times. Haukka refused to follow the officer’s commands and advanced on the officers, resulting in one officer deploying his TASER and another officer firing one round simultaneously at Haukka. Haukka was struck with both the TASER and a single gunshot to his mid-torso area.

The Los Angeles City Fire Department Paramedics responded and transported Haukka to a local area hospital where he was treated for the gunshot wound and was listed in stable condition.

A knife with a 4 inch blade was recovered from the ground where the suspect was taken into custody and no officers were injured.

LAPD’s specialized Force Investigation Division (FID) responded to the scene and began interviewing witnesses and collecting forensic evidence. A representative from the Office of the Inspector General and the Los Angeles District Attorney’s Office responded to the scene. The complete investigation will be reviewed by the Chief of Police and the Board of Police Commissioners to determine whether the use of deadly force complied with LAPD’s policies and procedures. The Los Angeles District Attorney’s Office will also review the evidence collected during the investigation to determine whether any criminal laws were violated.
