Los Angeles: The Los Angeles Police Department’s Force Investigation Division is investigating an Officer-Involved Shooting that occurred in Olympic Division.

On November 29, 2023, around 11:10 p.m., Olympic Division patrol officers responded to an “Assault with a Deadly Weapon suspect there now,” radio call at the 300 block of South Kenmore Avenue. As officers were driving on Kenmore Avenue, they observed the suspect, later identified as 28-year-old Dominica Briones, in the middle of the roadway attempting to stab a male, Hispanic with a knife.

The officers requested a back-up, exited their police vehicle, and ordered Briones to drop the knife. Briones ignored officers’ commands and continued advancing toward the victim while swinging the knife. The victim used a dresser drawer found discarded on the sidewalk as a shield and held it up in front of his chest to avoid being stabbed by Briones, and an Officer-Involved Shooting occurred.

Briones was struck by gunfire and was taken into custody without further incident. The Los Angeles Fire Department personnel responded and transported Briones to a local hospital where she was treated for her injuries and is listed in stable condition.

The victim sustained a minor laceration to his finger and was treated at scene by the Los Angeles Fire Department personnel. A kitchen knife with a 3” blade was recovered from Briones’ purse.

No officers or other citizens were injured during the incident.

The LAPD’s specialized Force Investigation Division responded to the scene, interviewed witnesses, and supervised the collection of evidence by the Forensic Science Division personnel. The complete investigation will be reviewed by the Chief of Police, the Board of Police Commissioners, and the Office of the Inspector General to determine the thoroughness and accuracy of the investigation and whether the use of deadly force complied with LAPD’s policies and procedures.
