Los Angeles: The Los Angeles Police Department’s (LAPD) Force Investigation Division is investigating an Officer-Involved Shooting (OIS) in Southeast Division.
On December 28, 2024, at around 11:30 p.m., two victims were standing on the sidewalk in front of a church located in the 1700 block of East 114th Street. The suspect, later identified as 54-year-old Los Angeles resident Kevin Doby, approached the victims, produced an AK style rifle and demanded their property. As Doby attempted to rob the victims at gunpoint, the victims charged him, taking Doby to the ground. As the victims and suspect struggled over control of the gun, Southeast Patrol Division uniformed officers were conducting regular patrol in the area and observed the group fighting.
The officers deployed from their vehicle, approached the group and as they did, one of the victim’s yelled, “He’s got a gun!” multiple times. The officers broadcast a backup request and gave numerous verbal orders to drop the gun. As the victims continued to struggle with Doby, they attempted to break away, and an Officer-Involved-Shooting (OIS) occurred. Doby, re-armed himself with the rifle and began to run, when a second OIS occurred. During the incident, the suspect was struck by the gunfire and dropped the rifle under a nearby parked car. The officers redeployed and after back-up units arrived took the suspect into custody without further incident.
Doby sustained gunshot wounds and was transported to a local hospital listed in stable condition. It was later determined that the victims were also struck by gunfire. Kevin Doby was placed under arrest for 211 PC-Armed Robbery.
The victims were transported to a separate hospital and listed in stable condition.
A loaded black and brown AK style, .22 Caliber rifle, and an approximately 3-inch folding knife were located and collected as evidence.
No officers or other community members were injured during this incident.
