The officer involved in the incident has been identified as Van Nuys Division Police Officer II Cameron Gobble, Serial No. 38321.

Sherman Oaks: Los Angeles Police Department’s (LAPD) Force Investigation Division is investigating an Officer-Involved Shooting (OIS) that occurred in a Sherman Oaks neighborhood.

On July 6, 2018, around 5:05 p.m., Van Nuys Patrol Division uniformed officers responded to a radio call of a Man with a Gun at a residence in the 4700 block of Tyrone Avenue. The comments of the call indicated a male, later identified as Tyler Deon Honeycutt, was possibly under the influence of an unknown narcotic, hallucinating and suffering from an unknown mental illness. He was reported to have thrown items within the residence and was known to have a 10mm handgun and a shotgun at the residence.

Upon arrival officers set up containment around the residence and made contact with Honeycutt, verbally and over the telephone. During the incident, Honeycutt fired at the officers, resulting in an Officer-Involved Shooting (OIS). At the time of the OIS it was unknown if Honeycutt had been struck by the officer’s gunfire. Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT), accompanied by our Mental Evaluation Unit and Crisis Negotiators, responded to the armed barricaded situation. After several hours of unsuccessful attempts to communicate with Honeycutt, SWAT entered the residence and located Honeycutt unresponsive inside of a bedroom. Los Angeles Fire Department Paramedics responded and declared Honeycutt deceased at scene, with what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

No officers were injured during the incident and a loaded semiautomatic handgun and a shotgun were recovered from inside Honeycutt’s residence.

LAPD’s specialized Force Investigation Division (FID) responded to the scene and began interviewing witnesses and collecting forensic evidence. A representative from the Office of the Inspector General responded and monitored the scene investigation.

The complete investigation will be reviewed by the Chief of Police and the Board of Police Commissioners and the Office of the Inspector General to determine the thoroughness and accuracy of the investigation and whether the use of deadly force complied with LAPD’s policies and procedures.
