Sherman Oaks: Los Angeles Police Department’s (LAPD) Force Investigation Division is investigating an Officer-Involved Shooting (OIS) that occurred in a Lake Balboa neighborhood.
On July 7, 2018, around 4:30 a.m., West Valley Patrol Division uniformed officers responded to a radio call of a male that was possibly suicidal and had access to a handgun in the 16000 block of Victory Boulevard.
Upon arrival officers located the male, later identified as Christopher Terry, in an alley north of Victory Boulevard, between Gaviota Avenue and Montgomery Avenue. As officers were communicating with Terry in an attempt to de-escalate the situation and take him into custody, Terry armed himself with a handgun and fired at officers, resulting in an Officer-Involved Shooting (OIS). Terry was struck by the officer’s gunfire and transported by Los Angeles Fire Department personnel to a local hospital, where he was treated for his injuries and listed in stable condition.
No officers were injured during the incident and a loaded handgun was recovered at scene.
LAPD’s specialized Force Investigation Division (FID) responded to the scene and began interviewing witnesses and collecting forensic evidence. A representative from the Office of the Inspector General responded and monitored the scene investigation.
The complete investigation will be reviewed by the Chief of Police and the Board of Police Commissioners and the Office of the Inspector General to determine the thoroughness and accuracy of the investigation and whether the use of deadly force complied with LAPD’s policies and procedures. Additionally, representatives from the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office who responded to the scene will review the subsequent FID investigation; evidence collected and witness statements to determine if the force used by the officers(s) was reasonable.
