As they were approaching the west side of Alvarado Street, Officer Arangure observed one of them carrying a sawed-off shotgun in his right hand. When the suspect ran onto the west sidewalk of Alvarado Street, he and another male separated from the group and started walking southbound on Alvarado Street. Officer Arangure stopped his vehicle facing in a northwesterly direction across Alvarado Street and he and Officer Magallon exited
As the officers approached the suspects on foot, the suspect with the shotgun turned and pointed it in the officers’ direction. Officer Magallon drew his service weapon and took cover at the rear of the police vehicle as Officer Arangure drew his service weapon and engaged the suspect. Officer Arangure fired at the suspect and struck him on his left side. When the suspect fell to the ground, the second suspect retrieved the shotgun and ran from the location southbound on Alvarado Street. He was last seen running eastbound into the alley east of Alvarado Street north of Beverly Boulevard.
An extensive search was conducted for the second suspect for approximately three hours, but failed to locate the suspect.
The first suspect was transported to a local hospital and was listed in stable condition. He will be booked for Assault with Deadly Weapon on a Police Officer. His identity will not be available due to him being a juvenile.
