Officer-Involved Shooting with Hatchet Swinging Suspect

 
Los Angeles : On November 13, 2004 , at about 7:30 p.m. , 77 th Street Area Police Officers Daniel Suarez, 29 years of age and four years with the Department and Jamal Dawoudi, 30 years of age and four years with the Department, responded to a radio call of a battery suspect at 1421 West 47 th Street .
The officers arrived at the location and as they were approaching the house, Arthur Reed, 57 years of age, a resident at that address and the subject of the radio call, exited the house carrying a hatchet. Reed confronted the officers and began swinging the hatchet. Reed continued to advance toward the officers, despite verbal orders to drop the weapon. Officer Suarez fired one round from his duty weapon, striking the suspect in the wrist and abdomen.
Reed was transported by Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics to Cedars-Sinai Hospital where he was pronounced dead a short time later.
The Los Angeles Police Department’s Force Investigation Division Detectives are conducting the investigation.
