Boyle Heights: On Thursday, February 15, 2001, at 10:30 a.m., the Los Angeles Police Department will host a press conference to educate the public on Operation Cease-fire. The press conference will take place at the Resurrection Church, located at 3340 Opal Street in Boyle Heights. Chief Bernard C. Parks will be attending the press conference, along with Los Angeles City Attorney James Hahn, and representatives from the District Attorney’s office, the U.S. Attorney General’s Office, gang intervention groups, the Los Angeles County Probation Department, representatives from the RAND Corporation, and Dr. Brian Johnston, White Memorial Hospital.
Operation Cease-fire is a collaborative effort between the Los Angeles Police Department, other entities of the criminal justice system and the community to reduce gang-related gun violence in the Boyle Heights area. The Operation Cease-fire strategy was developed by the RAND Corporation under a grant from the National Institute of Justice. It is opined that this coordinated effort will reduce gun violence in the community.
