Los Angeles: The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) announces three arrests for failure to disperse arrests from a local protest.
On August 22, 2023, around 10:00 a.m., the Leave Our Kids Alone and By All Means Necessary (BAMN) protesters gathered on Spring Street between 1st Street and Temple Street. Each group of about 50+ gathered on opposite sides of the street. The Leave Our Kids Alone marched from that location to the Los Angeles Unified School District Headquarters, located on the 300 block of S. Beaudry Avenue, to protest recent changes in the school curriculum.
During the protest, at 3rd Street and Beaudry Avenue, the LAPD personnel formed two protective skirmish lines to protect both groups from acts of violence and to ensure their 1st Amendment Right.
Due to prior acts of violence between these groups, officers attempted to create distance between both groups, but the BAMN group refused to move. The BAMN group became confrontational with the officers, pushing back on officers and holding makeshift signs utilized as shields.
As a result, around 12:00 p.m., officers issued a dispersal order. The crowd refused to leave the area. At around 12:15 p.m., uniformed resources effected the arrest of two BAMN protestors as they refused to leave per 409 PC- Failure to Disperse. A protestor from “Leave Our Kids Alone”, was also arrested as the protester entered the dispersal zone and refused to leave the area. At around 2:15 p.m., the area was cleared of all protesters without further incident.
