Los Angeles: On Saturday, December 1, 2001, at approximately 7:30 a.m., a fatal traffic collision occurred at the intersection of 5th and San Pedro Streets. A 28 year-old female resident of Huntington Park, was driving a 1990 Honda Accord westbound on 5th Street when she failed to stop for a red tri-light signal at San Pedro Street. The Honda vehicle collided with a 1993 Toyota Previa Van, that was being driven southbound on San Pedro Street, by a 21 year-old male resident of Los Angeles. After the impact, the van continued in a southwest direction and collided with three pedestrians, who were standing on the corner waiting to cross the street in an eastbound direction. One of the pedestrians, a 63 year-old male transient, sustained fatal injuries as a result of the collision and was pronounced dead at the scene. A 45 year-old male resident of Westchester and a 42 year old male resident of Los Angeles, were transported to a local hospital and treated for minor injuries. The name of the deceased victim is not available at this time.
There were three passengers in the Honda Accord, one complained of chest pains and the other sustained minor abrasions to the face. None of the passengers received medical treatment at the scene. There were two occupants in the Toyota Van, neither of whom complained of injuries.
Neither driver is suspected of being under the influence of alcohol or drugs and both were released at the scene. The investigation is ongoing and being handled by Central Traffic Division Detectives. Detective III Tia Morris can be contacted at 213-485-3111.
This case will be presented to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office where a determination will be made on whether or not to file charges.
