Opens https://lacity.gov/directory in a new window.Los Angeles: A Los Angeles police officer shot at a suspect who turned toward him holding an unidentified object in his waistband. The suspect wasn’t hit and no one was injured.
On Mar. 19, at around 7:40 p.m., officers from Operations West Bureau Violent Crime Task Force went to a radio call of a man with a gun near Wilshire Boulevard and Fairfax Avenue. When the officers got to scene, they spotted two subjects who ran away. One of the subjects ran into a nearby fast food restaurant. He was later taken into custody without incident. The other, fled to a back alley in the 1000 block of South Fairfax Avenue. When officers encountered the subject, he turned toward them holding something in his waistband. Officers Ruben Chavez, two years and eight months with Department, fired but miss the suspect. No officers were injured in the incident.
Prior to the incident, investigators believe that the two 17-year-old subjects, stole liquor at a CVS store. After canvassing the area, a liquor bottle was recovered on the rooftop of a business building. No weapon was found. Both subjects were given citations and released on their own recognizance.
Los Angeles Police Department’s Force Investigation Division will handle the investigation.
