Los Angeles: The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) Force Investigation Division is investigating an Officer-Involved Shooting (OIS) that occurred in the Rampart Area.
On June 28, 2017, around 7:15 p.m., uniformed officers from Rampart Area’s Gang Enforcement Detail (GED) were in the area of 3rd Street and Witmer Street when they made contact with Samuel Alamillo, a known documented gang member. Alamillo was uncooperative with the officers repeated commands and removed a semiautomatic handgun from his backpack. The officers requested additional units and an airship. As additional units arrived, Alamillo continued to ignore the officers commands to drop the gun and pointed the gun to his head.
The officers continued their attempts to verbally deescalate the situation, however Alamillo refused to comply at which time an officer fired several rounds from a beanbag shotgun, but it too proved ineffective. Alamillo then pointed his handgun in the direction of officers and an Officer-Involved-Shooting (OIS) occurred.
Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics responded and pronounced Alamillo dead at scene.
No officers were injured and a loaded semiautomatic handgun was recovered at scene.
LAPD’s specialized Force Investigation Division (FID) responded to the scene and began interviewing witnesses and collecting forensic evidence. FID will also review and collect all available body worn and digital in car video. The Office of the Inspector General and the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office had a representative at the scene. The complete investigation will be reviewed by the Chief of Police and the Board of Police Commissioners to determine whether the use of deadly force complied with LAPD’s policies and procedures. The Los Angeles District Attorney’s Office will also review the evidence collected during the investigation to determine whether any criminal laws were violated.
