WHY: Policeman (motor officer) James A. Ellsworth was killed in the line of duty in a traffic accident on September 4, 1917 at 6th Street and Occidental Boulevard. He was assigned the speed squad and was chasing a speeder westbound on 6th street. He lost control and skidded off the roadway hitting a telephone pole and died from his injuries.
