"Robbery Suspect Dies from Gunshot Wound"

Boyle Heights – Hollenbeck Homicide Detectives are investigating the shooting death of Alfredo Baltazar Jr., 19 years of age. On Thursday, August 24, 2000, at approximately 5:00 p.m., Baltazar entered the G&A Market, located at 3200 East 1st Street. Baltazar simulated a handgun and demanded money from the store owner. The owner, in fear of his life, armed himself and shot Baltazar once in the upper torso. Baltazar then exited the market and entered a 1990 Chevrolet, Cavalier, which was parked eastbound along the south curb adjacent to the market. Baltazar then drove his vehicle two blocks east to the intersection of Lorena Street and 1st Street where he collapsed inside his vehicle.

Los Angeles City Fire Rescue Ambulance responded to the scene and administered emergency medical treatment. Baltazar was subsequently transported to USC Medical Center where he was treated for a single gunshot wound to the upper chest area. Baltazar succumbed to his injury and was pronounced dead at 5:41 p.m.
