Screaming Man turns into an Armed Man

Los Angeles: Officer’s responding to reports of a man screaming found the man who then pointed a handgun at them, resulting in an officer involved shooting.

On January 1, 2012, Olympic Patrol Division uniformed officers were called to the 500 block of South Kenmore Avenue to investigate reports of a man heard screaming inside an apartment.

When the officers went to the door of the apartment the suspect, 58-year-old Donald Hillier, refused to open it and began making irrational remarks to the officers through the closed door, indicating someone was about to get hurt.

Fearing Hillier may be about to harm himself or another, the officers forced their way into the apartment. Once inside they saw Hillier who had armed himself with a handgun, and an officer involved shooting occurred involving Officer Jose Flores and Officer Michael Alvarez.

Hillier received injuries to his right hand and foot. The Los Angeles Fire Department transported him to a local hospital where he was treated and later released for booking. There were no injuries to any of the involved officers. A revolver was recovered at scene.

The LAPD Force Investigation Division responded to the incident and will conduct a thorough investigation of the officer-involved shooting and all related crimes. The investigation will ultimately be reviewed by the Chief of Police, the Office of the Inspector General and Board of Police Commissioners for compliance with the Department’s use-of-force policy which states that an officer’s use-of-force actions must be objectively reasonable.
