Los Angeles: The Los Angeles Police Department’s (LAPD) Newton area detectives are searching for a suspect who was seen armed with a rifle in the residential area of 69th Street and Avalon Boulevard.

On June 18, 2024, around 8:15 p.m., a community member called 911 upon seeing a suspect standing next to a car and loading a rifle. Thanks to the detailed description of the suspect and his attire, officers were able to locate him immediately upon arriving at the scene. When officers approached, the suspect fled on foot, leaving the rifle behind. Officers pursued the suspect and observed him reaching for his waistband before entering a nearby junkyard. Believing the suspect was still armed, officers requested additional resources. LAPD’s Metropolitan K9 and SWAT personnel responded to assist in apprehending the suspect. After several hours of searching, it was determined the suspect was no longer in the area.

The suspect is identified as 42-year-old Ezequiel Garcia. He is described as a male Hispanic, 5 feet 7 inches tall, weighing 157 pounds, and has short black hair. He is currently on active parole for murder and should be considered armed and dangerous.

The Los Angeles Police Department is alerting the South Los Angeles community about these crimes to emphasize the importance of personal safety. Residents are encouraged to be aware of their surroundings and to notify the police of any suspicious activity or individuals loitering in the area. As detectives work to apprehend the suspect, the LAPD will increase patrols in South Los Angeles. Residents will see more black-and-white police vehicles and uniformed officers in the neighborhood. This increased presence is being implemented as a precautionary measure.
