Techincal Investigation Division Accreditation
Los Angeles: On July 31, 2024, the Los Angeles Police Department’s Technical Investigation Division (TID) achieved international accreditation in the disciplines of digital media (cell phone data extraction/acquisition) and friction ridge (physical enhancement). This is a significant achievement because it involves mandatory compliance with over 100 requirements, including an assessment by representatives from the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) National Accreditation Board (ANAB). This third-party organization is the largest multi-disciplinary accreditation body in the western hemisphere, with more than 3,000 organizations accredited in approximately 80 countries.
TID provides forensic and technical services to law enforcement and the criminal justice system by collecting and analyzing evidence and presenting scientific findings in court. TID’s accreditation validates that its laboratory and personnel are committed to operating under a robust quality assurance system and that the testing services the laboratory provides meet the highest scientific standards.
The Department identified the accreditation of the technical laboratory as a 2023-2025 Strategic Goal and is proud to acknowledge the laboratory’s achievement. The hard work, determination, and dedication of the technical laboratory’s personnel played a vital role in its success.
TID is comprised of the Electronics Unit, Latent Print Unit, Photography Unit, Polygraph Unit, and the Quality Assurance Unit. In 2023, the Electronics Unit completed over 2,950 service requests, with 947 requests involving cell phone data extraction/acquisition. In that same year, the Latent Print Unit’s Chemical Processing Detail completed 1,081 requests involving the chemical processing of evidence for the presence of latent print impressions.
Any further questions regarding this matter can be directed to TID at 213-473-0630.
