Two 73-Year-Old Men Carjacked and Shot, Killing One

On Thursday, January 13, 2000, at approximately 3:30 p.m., Daniel Walcott, a retired pilot from Menlo Park, California and his passenger Richard Howard Reynolds, an attorney from Miami, Florida, were driving northbound on the 110 Freeway in a white 4-door, 2000 Pontiac Grand Am, license 4GIT598, when they realized they were being followed on the freeway by a white, full size, luxury car. In an attempt to evade the following car, the 73 year old men exited the 110 freeway at Avenue 43 and turned onto Homer Street which turned out to be a dead end road. The following vehicle followed them and rammed the Grand Am on its left front side. Two male Hispanic suspects exited and approached Walcott and Reynolds.

Suspect #1, described as a male, Hispanic, 25-35 years, 5′ 8" to 6’0" tall, 150-170 pounds, forced Walcott out of the Grand Am at gunpoint and shot him several times. Reynolds then ran from the vehicle but was also shot several times by Suspect #1 as he attempted to flee. The second suspect is described only as a male Hispanic. One of the two suspects jumped into the victim’s Grand Am and the suspects drove away in both cars.

A Los Angeles City Fire Rescue unit responded to the scene and provided emergency medical treatment to both Walcott and Reynolds. Walcott succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at scene. Reynolds was transported to USC Medical Center where he is listed in critical condition.

LAPD Robbery Homicide Division is conducting the investigation and believes the incident is narcotics related. The Grand Am driven by Walcott was recovered on January 14, 2000 in the City of Bell.
