Two Separate Traffic Collisions Result in 3 Fatalities

On Sunday, December 26, 1999, at approximately 6:30 p.m., two separate traffic collisions occurred within seconds of one another near the intersection of 42nd Street and Normandie Avenue. As a result of the collisions, there were 3 fatalities.

The first collision involved a 1990 Toyota pick-up truck that was northbound on Normandie. For unknown reasons, this vehicle swerved into southbound lanes colliding with a 1971 GMC pick-up truck. The pick-up truck collided with a 1994 Ford Mustang that was also going southbound in lane #2. As a result of these collisions, the driver of the Toyota and his 29-year old passenger were killed. Two other passengers in the Toyota were seriously injured and hospitalized.

The driver of the GMC pick-up truck was also killed. The driver of the Ford Mustang was injured but not hospitalized.

The second collision that occurred seconds later involved a 1985 Buick Regal that was northbound in lane #2. For unknown reasons, this vehicle swerved into southbound lanes and struck a 1988 Mercury Sable that was also southbound in lane #1. There were six occupants in the Mercury Sable. The driver of the Buick Regal was seriously injured and has been hospitalized at Martin Luther King Jr. Hospital.

The driver and occupants in the Mercury Sable were treated and released with minor injuries.
