West Valley Division In-Custody Death (ICD)

Los Angeles: On June 20, 2024, around 10:30 a.m., West Valley Patrol Division officers responded to a radio call of a Battery Domestic Violence at an apartment in the 5700 block of Etiwanda Avenue. Once officers arrived, they met with the victim, who indicated she and the suspect, later identified as 45-year-old Marlon Jimenez, were married and had a history of domestic violence. The officers observed visible injuries on the victim, which she stated had been caused by Jimenez. The victim directed the officers to the suspect, who was inside a bedroom of the apartment. The officers entered the bedroom and directed Jimenez to step into the hallway. As Jimenez was stepping toward the bedroom door, one of the officers placed a firm grip on Jimenez’s left arm and escorted him to the hallway. In the hallway, officers repeatedly told Jimenez they were conducting a domestic violence investigation and were going to handcuff and detain him. Jimenez argued with the officers and became increasingly agitated. During the encounter, Jimenez reached to his rear waistband and claimed he had a knife while retreating into a bedroom where he barricaded himself.

Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) and the Crisis Negotiation Team (CNT) were requested and responded to the location. After several hours of attempting to gain compliance fromJimenez, SWAT made entry and discovered Jimenez face down on the floor of his bedroom, underneath a mattress, with a ligature around his neck connected to the frame of his bed. A loaded firearm was discovered next to the right side of Jimenez’s hand. The firearm was a reported stolen loaded 9mm pistol.

The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner responded and conducted an on-scene investigation. No officers or other community members were injured in this incident.

Force Investigation Division (FID) investigators are investigating this incident.
