"Drive-By Shooting Claims One Victim"

Los Angeles – On Monday, October 9, 2000, at 8:45 p.m., a 20 year-old African-American male and an unidentified companion were walking eastbound in the 2100 block of West 54th Street. As the victims walked, two male suspects, described as African-Americans in a black vehicle, drove by and fired an unknown type firearm at the victims. The suspects then fled westbound on 54th Street.

One victim was struck numerous times by the gun-fire in his upper and lower torso. He was transported to a local hospital by Los Angeles Fire Department Rescue Ambulance. The victim failed to respond to treatment and was pronounced dead on October 10, 2000, at 4:15 a.m. The other victim was uninjured.

The motive for this incident has not been established. However, the shooting appears to be gang related. The name of the victim is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
