Hit and Run Driver of Charter Bus Strikes Elderly Man; Drags him on the Roadway Before Leaving the Scene

Los Angeles: The Los Angeles Police Department’s Central Traffic Division are asking for the public’s help in providing any information that would lead to the identification and arrest of the suspect involved in a hit and run collision that killed a 77-year-old man, a resident of Los Angeles.

On January 10, 2019, around 5:15 p.m., a commercial charter bus was travelling through the intersection of Flower Street and 23rd Street. The bus was headed southbound Flower Street at the time the driver struck the elderly man. After the collision, a witness saw a foot underneath the bus. As the bus was driving through the intersection of Flower Street and Adams Boulevard, the man was finally dislodged from underneath the bus. The witness attempted to get the driver’s attention, but was unable to as the bus was last seen on an onramp of the 110 Freeway.

The driver of the hit and run vehicle failed to stop and render aid as required by law.

The Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics responded and pronounced the man dead at scene. His name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

Detectives were able to identify the tour company who is associated with the bus and have identified the bus along with the driver that was involved in the collision. The tour bus company is cooperating with the investigation. Detectives have located the bus and are holding it for evidence. Detectives plan to interview the bus driver as part of their investigation.

On April 15, 2015, the City Council amended the Los Angeles Administrative Code and created a Hit and Run Reward Program Trust Fund. A reward of up to $25,000 is available to community members who provide information leading to the offender’s identification, apprehension, and conviction or resolution through a civil compromise.

Drivers are reminded that if they become involved in a collision, they should pull over and stop as soon as it is safe to do so, notify emergency services, and remain at the scene to identify themselves.
