LAPD Bike Officers Work Frantically To Keep Elderly Woman Alive

April 18, 2001

Los Angeles – On Tuesday, April 17, 2001, at approximately 11:45 a.m., an 81 year-old Asian woman was walking westbound on Olympic Boulevard at Gramercy Place when she was struck by a car. The driver, a male Asian in his 40’s, apparently did not see the woman who was walking outside the crosswalk, prior to the traffic collision.
Shortly after the collision, Los Angeles Police Department Bike Detail Officers assigned to the Wilshire Area Community Police Station came up on the scene. Upon the officers arrival, they observed the driver of the vehicle carrying the victim of the traffic collision onto the sidewalk. The officers saw that the victim was unconscious with obvious signs of trauma. Officers quickly rendered first aid and took turns applying life-saving CPR to the 81 year-old Asian woman who was near death. Officers simultaneously summoned paramedics, made the area safe for the victim and through traffic by diverting traffic. The officers continued to provide CPR and kept the elderly woman alive until City of Los Angeles Fire Paramedics arrived and transported her to Good Samaritan Hospital.
Unfortunately, the injuries to the elderly woman were such that she did not survive, despite desperate efforts to stabilize her condition. Officers Gordon Helper, Brian Gregson, Olin Osborne, and James Breslin are to be commended for their selfless efforts in attempting to keep the 81 year-old woman alive. It is due in part to their efforts, that the victim was able to survive long enough to make it to Good Samaritan Hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries.
